Westminster Sewer Construction Update – January 6, 2022

Home >> News >> Westminster Sewer Construction Update – January 6, 2022

The project will replace and reconstruct nearly three miles of two regional sewer pipelines on Westminster Boulevard between Seal Beach Boulevard and Rancho Road/Hammon Place in the cities of Seal Beach and Westminster.  One pipeline will be replaced at a time while the other pipeline is in service 24/7 to collect and transport wastewater for treatment and recycling.

With the New Year brings more construction activity on the Westminster Blvd. Sewer Project.

 UPCOMING CONSTRUCTION:

Intersection of Westminster Blvd. and Bolsa Chica

Two regional sewer pipes go through this intersection. We’ve been through the intersection before for the first pipe and now we will be getting ready for the second pipe. Surveying work will take place in the coming weeks.  The 4-way traffic signal will need to be switched to flashing red with flaggers to assist with traffic.  More information will be provided when the work approaches.

Between Bolsa Chica and Rancho Rd.

In the Neighborhood Bulletin, we described the slip-lining construction method which requires the construction of access pits every few hundred feet to install a new 36-inch pipeline inside the existing old 42-inch pipeline. Starting this month, construction of slip-line access pits will begin by installing vertical steel piles. These piles are used as temporary shoring for the excavation of the slip-lining access pits. This will require the closure of lanes on Westminster Blvd.  There will be at least one lane of travel in each direction. Please note this activity may be loud and cause vibrations.

Construction of the local Midway City Sanitary District sewer lines have been constructed through the intersection.  But there is still more work to occur. There are two regional sewer pipes, or inverted siphons, that dip under the channel. Upcoming construction will rehabilitate these siphons.  The work will first require the construction a new 84-inch diameter manhole and installation of bypass pipes to safely rehabilitate the siphons.
